William (Bill) D. Henry of Carlisle, PA, 83, passed on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at home with his three children by his bedside after a courageous six-year battle with lung cancer.
Bill was born on July 8, 1929 in Newport, PA. He was a graduate of the Class of 1947 of John Harris High School and served in the National Guard. In his younger years, he enjoyed bowling and hunting in Potter County. He retired in 1985 as Director of Quality Assurance, HQ Depot Systems Command, Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, after a 30-year Federal Government career that started at the former Olmstead AFB, Middletown. After retirement, Bill took up golf and volunteered at Mayapple Golf Links. He spent eight winters in Naples, FL, crabbing and golfing. He was a member of the Carlisle First Church of God, Carlisle BPOE Lodge 578, Carlisle Eagles Aerie 1299, the USGA, and NARFE. In addition, Bill was an avid supporter of USA Olympics. He loved to shop and never passed up a bargain. His daughter called him the “King of Coupons.”
He was the son of the late Anna Jane (Sunday) and Donald Henry of Harrisburg. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Fairlyn C. (Lerew). In addition, three children survive him: a daughter, Carol of Carlisle, and two sons, Gregory, Carlisle, and Jeffrey (Barbara), Halifax. Also surviving are: one granddaughter, Nicolle (Rich) Esposito, Bainbridge; one grandson, Cody Henry, Halifax; and one great granddaughter, Madelynn Esposito, Bainbridge. His brother, Robert (Claudia) Henry of Harrisburg, also survives him. A sister, Arletta, predeceased him.
Bill’s family thanks Dr. Kathryn Peroutka, Andrews & Patel, Dr. Philip Carey, Dr. Tate Kauffman, Spring Road Family Practice, and Debbie McGowan, Celtic Hospice, for all their professional and loving care during his battle with lung cancer.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 10, at 2 PM at the Hollinger Funeral Home & Crematory, 501 N. Baltimore Ave, Mt. Holly Springs, with the Rev. Richard Reese officiating. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 1 to 2 PM. Burial will follow in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens.
