William L. Leib, 83 of Mt. Holly Springs died Sunday, June1, 2013 at home. Bill was born March 14, 1931 in Carlisle, the son of the late Lee M. Leib and Kathleen E. “Katie” McLaughlin Leib.
In 1948, he enlisted in the United States Navy as a Radioman, serving through the Korean War until his discharge in 1954. From Key West, Fl., he returned to his hometown of Mt. Holly Springs to begin civilian life. He retired from the U.S. Army Garrison, Carlisle Barracks in 1993 after 30 years of service to his country.
The Navy instilled a sense of wanderlust in Bill, and he replaced his ship with a camper. From 1974 until his illness, no longer allowed travel, the camper became a home away from home, and a never-ending source of adventure and friendships. He especially loved introducing his grandson to travel life.
Bill was an avid photographer, a database master, and loved gadgets and technology. He embraced senior citizenship; taking full advantage of the discounts, as well as the ability to get away with comments not afforded a younger man. Saying he was even tempered is a huge understatement. He loved to laugh at a good joke or screwball comedy. Few things knocked him off his even keel, but bad restaurant service, the price of bread and the current Commander in Chief would send him in a tizzy.
On August 12, 1951, he hitchhiked from Key West to marry Mary Jane “Molly” Stine; the woman who would remain at his side for the next 62 years. Molly was his co-pilot, navigator, and most importantly, his best friend.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Michael and wife Erinn Leib of Shippensburg, grandson Taylor Leib of Chambersburg, Sister, Edna Hawbaker of Mt. Holly Springs, 1 nephew and 4 nieces. In addition, Jack Hawbaker and James (Beverly) Stine, who were like brothers to him.
The family would like to give special recognition to the selfless staff of Celtic Hospice of Mechanicsburg. The level of dignity and quality of care they provided was beyond compare.
In lieu of flowers, Bill would appreciate it if you took your grandkids to Disney World. When you ride “It’s a Small World”, smile and think of him.
