Rodney William Smyers, 93, of Mechanicsburg, PA, passed away Sunday, May 23, 2021, in the Church of God Home, Carlisle. He was born in Idaville on November 29, 1927, to the late George and Laura (Myers) Smyers and is survived by his loving wife, Esther (McKinney) Smyers. He was predeceased by his siblings, Doralyn Renolds, Helen Grove, Harold, Kenneth, Donald, and Richard Smyers. Also surviving are his children, William (spouse Carol) Smyers, Thomas (Cheryl) Smyers, and Sharon (Larry) Zeigler; granddaughters, Allison (Phil) Hollen and Amanda (Christopher) Scheler; and great-grandchildren, Elliott Hollen, and Ezra, Maeve, and Jonas Scheler. Rodney was employed by the former Eaton-Dikeman Paper Mill in Mt. Holly Springs. He and Esther attended Idaville United Brethren Church. He was a great fan of baseball and was treasurer of the Idaville, PA baseball team for many decades. Rodney lived in the same house he was born in for more than 85 years in Idaville. He and Esther celebrated 73 years of marriage. He enjoyed music, and family could hear the likes of Jimmy Fortune and The Statler Brothers coming from his stereo. He loved Penn State football. He spent warm summer afternoons and evenings swinging on his wooden porch swing. Rodney ate ice cream every day. He loved ice cream. He had a large laugh and a goofy, sweet smile. He played with his granddaughters and, then, his great-grandchildren as he grew older. They will remember him making loud barking noises that made them giggle. Everyone will remember his great big bear hugs. He had a long, full life. He will be missed. Private funeral services were held for the immediate family. Arrangements were handled by the Hollinger Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., Mt. Holly Springs, PA. Please visit www.HollingerFuneralHome.com to offer condolences to the family.
