Richard Junior Fahnestock, nickname Dick, died Sunday, September 27, 2015 at Howard County General Hospital Maryland. He was a resident of Brighton Gardens Assisted Living Facility in Columbia, Maryland.
Dick was born June 4, 1923 in Mt. Holly Springs, PA, son of the late William B. Fahnestock and Lola Rockey Fahnestock. He graduated from Carlisle High School; graduated University of Illinois with Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1948; and graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J. with a MSEE.
Dick was in the US Army Air Force during the Second World War and attended technical schools at various military installations, as well as in Madison, Wisconsin where he met his wife, Lorraine.
On March 16, 1945 he was married in Madison, Wisconsin to Lorraine Rood Fahnestock, deceased in 2003. He leaves his son, Douglas W. Fahnestock and daughter-in-law, Margaret Fahnestock of Burlington, Ontario, Canada. He also leaves his sister, Evelyn Fahnestock Lattimer Anderson of Sarasota, FL; a brother, Dale Lavern Fahnestock of Elkridge, MD; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Dick’s life-long love for baseball started with playing for Mt. Holly, continued at UCLA, then fast pitch softball in industrial leagues in New Jersey. While living in Singapore he taught softball and organized the first softball league there.
Dick worked as an electrical engineer for IT&T Federal Laboratories in Nutley, N.J., where he received a patent for an antenna for Loran C which provided guidance for military aircraft. He was one of the lead developers for the first all-electronic combat radar used by the US Navy’s first nuclear aircraft carrier and cruiser.
Dick had a long career in Space organizations: engineer at Hughes Aircraft in California; Space Technology Labs in Singapore; NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratories (JPL) where he lived in Hawaii; Adelaide, Australia; Johannesburg; Madrid; and California. He was JPL’s Deep Space Network Manager of Operations at NASA Headquarters in Washington until his retirement. Dick traveled the world and enjoyed golfing, tennis, as well as baseball.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, October 2, 2015 at 3:00 PM at the Hollinger Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 501 N. Baltimore Ave., Mt. Holly Springs, PA 17065 with the Rev. David Clark officiating. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery in Goodyear, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Assoc., 1019 Mumma Rd., Wormleysburg, PA 17043.
