(Mildred) Emily C. Jacoby, age 94, passed away on November 28, 2013 in Medford, Oregon. She was born September 9, 1919 in Arlington, Massachusetts to Mervin and Mildred Beetem Coyle. Emily lived in Carlisle until age 12, when her family moved to a farmhouse at Craighead. She and her siblings spent happy days there exploring the fields and swimming in the Yellow Breeches creek.
Emily graduated from Penn State University in 1941 with a degree in Landscape Architecture. She was the only woman in her graduating class that year. During college she learned to fly a small plane and once flew home during winter break, landing in a cornfield on her parents’ farm.
In 1942, Emily married David Baer Jacoby of Mechanicsburg. They had three daughters. Emily and David lived in Carlisle for 18 years, 12 of which Emily worked as an elementary school art teacher for the Cumberland Valley School District. She found delight in her students’ work and arranged a show of their art at the Bosler Library. Emily practiced her landscaping skills by designing landscapes for the homes of her family and friends. She designed the house where she and her family lived. During holidays, she turned her artistic eye to the creation of floral designs at George’s Flowers.
Emily and David moved to Palo Alto, California in 1971, where they lived for 30 years. Emily studied painting, drawing, sculpting and stained-glass. She also did furniture restoration. Nature was her deepest love and this was reflected in her art. With vision and dexterity, she created a naturally beautiful, harmonious environment wherever she lived. Emily had an organic community garden plot for many years and was an exquisite cook. An avid bridge player, she was a familiar face in the local and state bridge tournaments and achieved Life Masterstatus. In 2001, Emily moved to the Rogue Valley Manor in Medford in southern Oregon.
Emily is survived by her children, Carlin Patricia (Jane Duffy) Jacoby and Judith Jacoby, all of Los Altos. Calif.; her sister Mary Louise Wickstead, of Medford Ore.; niece Susan Coyle Coulson and her family; and nephew Johnson Coyle and his family, both of Carlisle. She was preceded in death by her husband, David; her brother William Coyle; and her first daughter, Eleanor Catherine “Robin”, who passed away at the age of six.
A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
