Merle Pickel Herr, 91, formally of Blain, Perry County, PA passed away on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at his home in Salunga, PA. He was born August 31, 1923 in Landisville, PA to the late Roy S. and Alice Pickel Herr and was the widower of Elizabeth K. Herr, who passed away May 7, 2006.
Merle was a retired truck driver. He was a member of the Chiques United Methodist Church, Mt. Joy and volunteered for Transport for Christ. Merle was a charter member of the Antique Truck Historical Society, the Susquehanna Valley Chapter and belonged to the American Truck Historical Society. He loved to spend time tinkering and restoring old trucks. Merle was a life member of the VFW, Mt. Joy and the American Legion. He served in the US Navy during WW II and was a Seaman second class on the USS Gilbert Islands CVE-107 Aircraft Carrier from 1944 thru 1946.
He is survived by his son, Barry (Cindy) Herr of Mt. Joy and 2 daughters, Shirley (Glenn) Kaylor and Linda (Gerald) Geib, both of Manheim. Also surviving is his step-daughter, Patricia McCorkel of Hershey; a sister, Elva Mae (Alvin) Horst of Big Pool, MD; and 6 grandchildren.
A memorial services will be held Thursday, October 9, 2014 at 10:00 AM in the Chiques United Methodist Church, 1215 E. Main St., Mt. Joy, PA 17552 with Pastor Beverly Andrews officiating. Interment will be in the Blain Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to his church or the Alzheimer’s Assoc., 2595 Interstate Dr., Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
