Maria Verdekal, 69, passed away Friday, May 30, 2014 in the Carlisle Regional Medical Center. She was born March 24, 1945 in Greece to Kimon Monahas and Kydonia Parveris and was the widow of James L. Verdekal who passed away in 2003.
Maria was a member of the St. Mary Orthodox Church in Chambersburg. She was a housewife who loved to garden and cook and she will be remembered for her delicious meals. Maria also enjoyed nature and taking care of her family and friends. She will be sadly missed.
Surviving Maria is her son, Albert (Angie) Verdekal of Carlisle; a daughter, Sophia (Alex) O’Neal of Williamsburg, VA; and 2 grandchildren, Keira and Colin O’Neal. Also Surviving Maria are 5 sisters; Koula Galanos of Williamsburg, VA; Eleftheria Psarovarkas of Pasadena, TX; Litsa Monahas of Lancaster, PA; Despina Liapakis of Long Island, NY; and Christina Tsiforis of Queens, NY; and 2 brothers, Dimitrios Monahas of Pasadena, TX and Harry Monahas, Lancaster, PA.
Services will be held at St. Mary Orthodox Church, 2063 Lincoln Highway East, Chambersburg, PA 17202 on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at 11:00 AM with Father Theodore Pulcini officiating. A visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to her church or the Carlisle Cancer Center, 25 Sprint Drive, Carlisle, PA 17013. Arrangements are being handled by Hollinger Funeral Home and Crematory, 501 N. Baltimore Ave., Mt. Holly Springs, PA 17065.
