Laura Hykes

Laura Romaine Hykes, 86, formerly of Gardners, PA, passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2015 in Green Ridge Village, Newville. She was born August 31, 1928 to the late Carson and Susan Bertha Fahnestock Speelman in Adams County and was the widow of Kenneth E. Hykes who passed away on October 31, 1993.

Romaine worked as a clerk for Knouse Foods.  A member of the Idaville United Brethren Church and a long standing member of the Women’s Missionary Association, Romaine loved her Lord Jesus Christ and served him in many ways.  She was an avid gardener, especially of flowers, loved cooking and mending for her family, and was a very loving mother to her five children. Romaine was proud of all her grandchildren and loved them with all her heart.

Surviving her are 4 children; Kenneth D. (Diana) Hykes of Gardners, Laura Jean (Dennis) Byers of Newville, Janet (Premnath) Dick of Lancaster and Joyce (Frank) McLaughlin of York Springs; 9 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and a brother, Carson Speelman Jr. of York Springs. She was predeceased by her daughter, Bertha Hykes Walls who passed away on December 3, 1977 and a great granddaughter, Carlyn Lester who passed on July 9, 2006.

Services will be held on Monday, March 2, 2015 at 10:00 AM in Hollinger Funeral Home & Crematory, 501 N. Baltimore Ave., Mt. Holly Springs, PA 17065 with Rev. Stuart Johns officiating. There will be a viewing Sunday, March 1, 2015 from 6 until 8 PM in the funeral home and 1 hour prior to the service on Monday. Interment will be in the Mt. Tabor Cemetery.
