Joan Sovenski Weiss, 93, of Carlisle, PA, passed away on November 30, 2024 in Green Ridge Village Skilled Nursing Facility in Newville, PA. She was born on August 12, 1931 in Nanticoke, PA to the late Anthony and Adele (Pilvelis) Sovenski.
Joan was a graduate of Nanticoke High School, class of 1949 and Wilkes-Barre General Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1952. From 1953-1954, Joan worked at Weill Cornel Medical Center in New York City. In September 1954, she joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. Basic training was at Fort Sam Houston, TX. Joan served with honor and was stationed in Louisiana, Germany, Georgia and Pennsylvania. In 1958, Joan was promoted to the rank of Captain. She served during the Cuban Missile Crisis and during the Cold War.
Joan was the widow of Thomas C. Weiss, who passed away on January 21, 2023. Surviving is her only child Adele Group and her husband Barry, in Mount Holly Springs, PA; brother-in-law Joseph Weiss in Williamsport, PA; niece Debra Derr and her husband, Ron in Williamsport, PA; niece Donna Sontag in Merchantville, NJ; cousins Jerry and Cheri Brauer of Hillsdale, MI and Lt. Col. (USA, Ret.) Albert and Donna Brauer of Montgomery, OH; second cousins Elizabeth (Brauer) and Kelby Haase and their daughters Isabel and Bailey of Cincinnati, OH.
Joan loved her family. She was an incredible wife and mother. Joan loved reading and passed her love of books onto her daughter, Adele. Joan also enjoyed traveling. While stationed in Germany, Joan and her best friend traveled all through Europe. She also enjoyed listening to music, cats, classic movies and comedies.
Private services will be held at the discretion of the family at Hollinger Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 501 N. Baltimore Ave., Mt. Holly Springs, PA 17065. A military honors funeral will be held on December 10, 2024 at 11:00am at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, Pa. Close family and friends are respectfully invited to attend this graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement (atonementfriars.org).
