Janet C. Smith, 84, of Carlisle, PA, passed away Tuesday, October 16, 2018 in Green Ridge Village, Newville. Born May 21, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Jackson and Mable (Holtry) Vaughn and the widow of James W. Smith who passed away August 2, 1993 and was preceded in death by her first husband, Marlin E. March, who passed away May 4, 2015. Janet retired from the US Army War College as an administrative assistant and was a member of the Barnitz United Methodist Church. An avid Jeff Gordon and NASCAR fan, she also loved to embroider, sew, cook and bake. Planting flowers, working in her yard, crafting, and completing crossword and jigsaw puzzles were some of her favorite pastimes. Janet also enjoyed rifle hunting for deer, having bagged trophy whitetails in both Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and shot antelope and mule deer during her trips to Montana. A lifelong lover of cats, she had many Tabbies, Persians, Siamese, Burmese and Tonkinese, which she cared for like they were her children.
Janet is survived by her son, William E. (Ruth A.) March of Carlisle; two grandchildren, Olivia E. March of Carlisle and Chelsea M. (Lance)Bonner of Newville; and great grandson, Hunter William Bonner. Also surviving are her siblings, Mildred Welsh, Evelyn Frick,and Anna Marie Farner, all of Carlisle, Mary Farlling of Newville, Emma Jane Wigfield of Delta, Ohio, George Vaughn of Newville and Harold Vaughn of Mechanicsburg.
A Memorial service will be held at Barnitz United Methodist Church, 23 Church Lane, Carlisle, PA 17015 on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Matthew D. Plant officiating.Interment will be in the Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to her church.
