James Leroy Messner, 78, of Mechanicsburg, PA, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, April 16, 2017. He was born February 21, 1939 in Lykens, PA to the late William L. and Mary S. Messner.
James retired as a draftsman and managing engineer from Greenray Industries in Mechanicsburg, with over 40 years of service. He was a member of the New Hope Church of God, Carlisle. Passionate about music, he was a member of Harrisburg Musicians Local 269 and played with many local bands for 60 years, including Schwabs Dutch Band and the Harrisburg Moose Band. James was also the owner and director of Engerlander German Band. He had a love for his animals and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
James is survived by his companion of 22 years, Sandra Mae Bender, of Mechanicsburg; three children, David Messner of Texas, Roy Messner of Collegeville, PA and Diane Carmen of Lemoyne, PA; and seven grandchildren, Emily, Dustin, Kyle , Kody, Kristopher, Karissa and Zach; and one great grandchild . Also surviving are five stepchildren, Donna Thorson of VA, Sherry Guise, Lisa Bender and Donald Bender, all of Carlisle, Jennifer Bender of NY; sister, Catherine (Bruce) Markel of Loysville, PA; and one step-grandchild, Kyle Bender, who he raised. James was preceded in death by three brothers, Ted, Robert and William Messner.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 11:00 AM in the Mount Holly Springs Church of God, 602 McLand Rd., Mt. Holly Springs, PA 17065 with the Rev. Richard L Reese officiating. Burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Holly Springs Church of god.
