James E. Kauffman, 89, of Mechanicsburg and formally of Dillsburg, passed away May 14, 2014 at Country Meadows in Mechanicsburg. He was born July 5, 1924, in Waynesboro, PA to the late Ephraim “Skip” Adam Kauffman and Jeannetta Martin.
James served in the U.S. Navy during WW II, spent 3 ½ years on the USS Cleveland CL-55 and retired from Mechanicsburg Naval Depot after 31 years as a specification writer for shipboard equipment. He was a member of the VFW Post 6771 in Dillsburg, the Mechanicsburg Club, and the American Legion Post 974 in New Cumberland. Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman.
James is survived by two sons, Richard Smith (Cherry) of Silver Springs, MD and Paul “Buz” (Renee) Smith of Cape Cod, MA; three daughters, Carol Yost (Stanley) of East Berlin, PA, Cindy Laskowsky (Tye) of Phoenix, AZ, and Barbara Murray (Daniel) of Dillsburg, PA; a brother, Roy Kauffman of FL; 9 grandchild and 9 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his two wives, Barbara L. Kauffman who passed away on Feb. 29, 2004 and Jane Slusser Kauffman who passed away on Nov. 21, 2012; and 4 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday May 17, 2014 at 2:00 PM in the Hollinger Funeral Home & Crematory, 501 N. Baltimore Ave., Mt. Holly Springs, PA with his cousin Ray Yovanovich leading the service. A visitation will be held one hour prior to service. Interment will be in the Dillsburg Cemetery with honors presented by the Cumberland County Honor Guard.
