Frederick R. Loring was born September 4, 1927 and was raised in Tyringham, located deep within the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts. There he attended a one room school house with no running water and a wood stove that the students attended. In 1943 he enlisted in the Naval Reserve and served on Base Harbor Craft in Pearl Harbor. Following the war he attended college where he met and married Mary Jakeman from Cape Town South Africa. They have three children, eight grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. The family has many happy memories of camping vacations.
Fred graduated with honors from the Coyne Electrical School in Chicago and worked with the local electric utility as a high-voltage test operator. Then he switched, and worked in the natural gas industry for 43 years. He held a number of positions including division manager, then spent 16 years as an engineer with the American Meter Company. He also worked as trainer and consultant, teaching seminars on gas measurement and control for the Institute of Gas Technology which took him to 47 states and several foreign countries.
He had many hobbies and interests. He enjoyed playing the organ and at one time served as a substitute organist for seven area churches. With a green thumb earned from a lifetime of working the soil he enjoyed planting a vegetable garden and a garden of perennial flowers with Mary. Together they RV’d through 31 states following retirement and also enjoyed a tour of Europe and several cruises. Late in life he tried his hand at painting using water colors and oils.
Fred always played a role in his local church, and was a member of the Gideons for 33 years, at one time serving as Pennsylvania state chaplain. Fred and Mary also gave a year of service to the Wycliff Bible Translators in Waxhaw N.C. As a man of faith, Fred always tried to honor God with his time, talents and treasure.
