Betty Shannon, 91, was called to her heavenly home by her Savior and Lord Jesus Christ on Monday, August 14, 2017. She was born March 3, 1926, to the late Arthur Jordan Wilkie, Sr., and Isabella Lawson Smith Wilkie in Philadelphia, PA.Her family resided in Glenside, PA. Her mother and father were recent immigrants from Scotland.
She graduated from Cheltenham High School in 1944, and worked as a secretary/clerk in center-city Philadelphia, commuting each day on the train. Betty married her high school sweet-heart, Charles Carbaugh Shannon, Jr., in 1947, after his military service in World War II.
They moved to Levittown, PA, where they raised four children. Betty dedicated her life to serving Jesus Christ. She became active in Emilee Methodist Church in Levittown, PA. When the children were mostly grown, she became a pre-school teacher at the Emilee’s day school. She loved this ministry to children and taught school for many years.
Betty and Charlie moved from Levittown to Indian Mountain Lakes in the Pocono Mountains of PA. They spent winters in Sarasota, FL, where they served and be-friended other retirees. In 2001, they moved to Chambersburg, PA and lived in the home of Ken and Laurie Shannon. They were a joy to their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. They served in the Grace Baptist Church where Betty continued to support missionary wives and their children.
Betty was God’s blessing to her husband, family and friends. Her cheerful spirit brought encouragement to many people. She was a model of Christian faithfulness, and though she dearly missed her husband Charlie, she was content with God’s will.
Betty is survived by her sons, C. Kenneth Shannon, husband of Laurie of Chambersburg, PA and Allan F. Shannon, husband of Dorothy of Meadowbrook, PA and her daughter, Gail V. Groling, wife of Charles of Williamstown, NJ. She is also survived by her brother, Arthur Jordan Wilkie Jr. of Lansdale, PA, 10grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Betty was predeceased by her parents, her sonJeffrey and her husband Charlie Shannon.
A Service of Worship and Celebration of her Life will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 11:00 AM in the Grace Baptist Church, 2475 McCleary Dr., Chambersburg, PA with Pastor Craig Harris, officiating. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service and a fellowship meal will follow the service.She will be laid to rest in the Mt. Holly Springs Cemetery, at the convenience of the family.
